How To Choose A Good Kitchen Knife Handle
On September 29, 2021 by FlorenceWhether you’re shopping for yourself or searching for something to give as a gift, there are lots to consider when choosing the best kitchen knife set. While the most basic kitchen knives are the basic folding blades, other kinds of knives come in more attractive colors and styles. While this doesn’t mean much if you’re shopping for a gift, it does help show that you’ve put some thought into your shopping trip. Knife sets come in many sizes and materials, and it helps to know which would be best for you.
- The main knife handles you should look at is the one with the larger “toothed” tip. Most professional chefs prefer the satin black handles with a single rounded point and the length is up to six inches. The more polished and modern look also works very well with most sets, but the traditional black satin or polished handles work well if you prefer a more classic style. Shun branded handles tend to be made from a strong metal alloy, such as zinc or stainless steel.
- To help you find a great deal on a great knife set, you can always check Amazon or eBay. Both sites have plenty of options and while the prices may be a bit higher than what you find on Amazon, you can rest assured that you won’t be paying any more for it than what the store is asking for. Remember that quality replacement knives are not always available with every single brand. Sometimes a high-end knife maker only puts their best stuff on the brand label, so you will usually pay more for it there. This doesn’t mean that it’s a bad thing though; high-end brands are generally of a much higher quality so you might actually be getting more value for your money!
- Some of the higher-end knives handles come in different shapes and sizes. Check out some of the sets on Amazon and see which ones look the best in your hands. You can also do a search for “handles” on Amazon, and it should give you plenty of options for both traditional (flat) handle and ergonomic (tension) handle types. The former is the more common type but they tend to cost a bit more on the outset. These types of handles tend to offer a bit more balance and comfort for people who like to carry around a big knife all day long, so they are great for people who need a little more support for their hands.
- Tanto blades and some other styles come in folders that have a full tang and drop point blade attachments. The full tang allows for more strength and control, and the drop point is more practical for slicing. It is recommended that you avoid the folders that have half tang or straight blade attachments as it makes sharpening the knives harder and does not allow for consistent cutting. You should also stay away from the folders that have integral ball bearings as it will affect the quality of your cut. These types of handles are also prone to rust, especially when exposed to moisture.
Zwilling offers several lines of these kinds of handles, including one called “Limited Edition.” While it has a full tang and drop point blade, it is only available in two different sizes: large and small. It is also made of plastic riveted to the handle, rather than the wood bolster. This plastic bolster makes for a more stable handle, and it helps make the knife much easier to grip during use.
